Glenore Grove State School is a school with enrolments currently over 200 students. We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning school and have 3 school wide expectations – Be Respectful, Be Responsible & Be Safe. We have a strong sense of community and are focussed on providing the best education and preparation for life and further education.
We have a strong focus on improving reading outcomes. We believe in teaching reading to learn. We explicitly teach both decoding and comprehension strategies to all students. As part of the teaching of reading we cover phonics, fluency, vocabulary, text structure and its features, comprehension and background knowledge. We follow the Science of Reading philosophy. We actively collect data & analyse this to inform our teaching practices.
Student Wellbeing for Engaging Literate Learners
GGSS SWELL Framework is how we ensure the wellbeing of all members of the school community. We recognise that wellbeing is connected to learning. At GGSS we nurture students so they become resilient lifelong learners who can become successful in their life pursuits.
This Framework is based on the department’s SLWF (Student Learning & wellbeing framework) and incorporates other aspects we cover. Teachers regularly teach these aspects to ensure the wellbeing of our students. We also engage in a Social-Emotional Survey through ACER.
Social Emotional Learning
At our school we support student learning through the use of strong relationship building between staff and students. We also run some amazing programs to support and prepare our students for their lives in the big wide world. We teach self –regulation, social skills and Social Emotion Learning through the use of Zones of Regulation, Rock & Water & PATHS program. We do this school wide, whole class and in small groups for students that need more intensive support.
We focus on teaching students to have a growth mindset and understand how their brains work and can grow. This curriculum looks at brain health, how the brain works, executive functioning, growth mindset, self-regulation and mindfulness. Lessons are taught weekly.
At Glenore Grove State School we offer a unique opportunity for children prior to starting Prep. Our Pre-Prep program called ‘Step Up’ is designed to better prepare and support children in their transition to school. Children experience the routines of school whilst being supported by their parents and the ‘Step Up’ teacher. Students have fun participating in activities that prepare them socially and academically for Prep, including an early literacy program, a perceptual motor program and oral language activities. The program eases some of the anxiety associated with starting Prep and allows families a smoother transition into school.
